SB 3.5.9-16: Desire to Hear Topics About Lord Kṛṣṇa

Hare Krsna,

The symptom of a pure devotee is that he is always engaged in hearing and chanting about the Supreme Lord, Krsna. He has no other devotee than constantly hearing Krsna katha.

BG 10.9: The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

Vidura is truly a pure devotee because to come to a platform where one does not want to hear about mundane topics of this material world anymore but wants to hear about the Lord and His transcendental pastimes is not easy. Srila Prabhupada, in his earthly manifestation, was always engaged in speaking Krsna-katha.

Theologically, hearing mundane topics entangle us in this material world; these topics are products of the three modes of material nature. On the other hand, Krsna katha liberates us because transcendental topics about Krsna and Krsna Himself are non-different. In Chapter 5 of Srimad Bhagavatam, Sri Narada explains the difference between material and spiritual literature.

SB 1.5.10: Those words which do not describe the glories of the Lord, who alone can sanctify the atmosphere of the whole universe, are considered by saintly persons to be like unto a place of pilgrimage for crows. Since the all-perfect persons are inhabitants of the transcendental abode, they do not derive any pleasure there.

SB 1.5.11: On the other hand, that literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest.

Srila Prabhupada, being the most munificent representative of the Lord, spent his lifetime writing and publishing Krsna conscious literatures for us. He has given us more than we could probably consume in this lifetime. He did this because he is very compassionate to conditioned living entities like me. He desires for us nothing less than going back home, back to Godhead to associate with Krsna and His associates.

But personally speaking, I am so unfortunate and ungrateful. I understand philosophically that hearing and chanting topics about Krsna should be my only duty. But I am not yet practically applying it. Due to my conditional nature, I am still drawn to mundane news about politics, sports, etc. This means I have jnana but not vijnana yet. I sincerely desire that I want to be absorbed in hearing topics about Krsna and nothing else. Therefore, forums such as sadhu sanga online gives me the opportunity to hear about Krsna all the time. Hearing the lectures, meditating upon them, sharing our realizations, and attending the weekend review sessions is a wonderful way to practice hearing Krsna katha. I am thankful to our dear teachers for that.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
